I have more kibble! What to feed a cat?

Although food specifically designed for cats is the best option for them, there are one-off solutions that you can find in your cupboards or refrigerator.

Be careful with what you give your cat, because not everything is good for his health. Below, find out which foods are good for your feline, and which ones you should absolutely avoid.

Cooked rice or pasta

If you have rice or pasta in your kitchen, you can cook it without adding salt, seasonings or sauces. These starchy foods can serve as a basis for occasional food for your cat.

Make sure they are thoroughly cooked and cooled before giving them to your cat. Rice and pasta provide carbohydrates and a source of energy for your cat, although it cannot replace a balanced diet in the long term.

Boiled lean meat

If you have lean, unseasoned meat, like chicken or turkey, you can boil it without oil or spices. Boiled meat can be a source of protein for your cat, but it is important to remove the skin, bones and fat before feeding it to your pet.

Make sure the meat is thoroughly cooked and cooled before serving in small portions.

Cooked fish

Cooked fish is another option you can consider when you run out of kibble. Make sure to remove all the bones and skin, then steam or boil it. Avoid using spices, salt or sauces.

Fish can be a good source of protein and fatty acids for your cat. However, don't give it too often, as some fish can contain high levels of mercury.

Cooked vegetables

Some cooked vegetables can be added to your cat's food to provide vitamins and fiber. Cat-friendly vegetables include carrots, zucchini and pumpkins.

Be sure to cook and puree them well to make it easier for your cat to digest. Do not use seasonings, garlic or onions, as these ingredients can be toxic to cats.

Eggs

Cooked eggs are a high-quality source of protein for cats. You can cook an egg and cut it into small pieces before giving it to your cat. Make sure it is cooked well, without adding salt or seasonings. Raw egg should not be given to your cat because it could contain bacteria that are dangerous for your animal.

Dangerous foods for cats

There are certain foods you should absolutely avoid when looking for alternatives to cat food. These foods can be harmful or even toxic for your feline:

  • Chocolate : Chocolate contains theobromine, a substance toxic to cats. Never give your pet chocolate, as it can cause serious heart and neurological problems.
  • Onions and garlic : These vegetables can damage cats' red blood cells, leading to anemia. So avoid giving foods containing onion or garlic to your cat.
  • Dairy products : Contrary to popular belief, many cats are lactose intolerant. Their digestive system cannot digest it properly, which can cause gastrointestinal upset. So avoid milk and dairy products.
  • Sweet foods : Sweet foods, such as candy or cakes, are not suitable for cats. Their digestive systems are not designed to digest sugar, and this can lead to health problems, including diabetes.
  • Salty foods : Foods high in salt, such as salty snacks or leftovers from prepared meals, are not suitable for cats. Excess salt can cause dehydration and kidney problems.

How much food should you give your cat?

If cats are often used to having food as much as they want, we should not do the same when we decide to give other foods that are not specifically designed for our little felines.

In the case of a temporary “human” diet, the portions vary depending on several factors, such as the age, weight and health of your cat. As a general rule, for foods such as cooked rice, pasta, meat or fish, you can start by giving about 1-2 tablespoons per meal, spread out over the day. Monitor your cat's reaction carefully and adjust the quantities according to their appetite and general condition. Also remember to provide your cat with fresh water at all times to keep it properly hydrated.

It's important to note that these alternative food suggestions should only be used temporarily, when you truly have no other options. Food specially formulated for cats is designed to meet their specific nutritional needs. So make sure you get some cat food as soon as possible.
